The story of Lookout Mountain Park begins thousands of years ago. Native Americans have been living at this site for centuries, and one can find artifacts from these cultures all around the park. In fact, a large number of arrowheads were found during construction in 1995-1996 alone! The mountain itself was named by Zebulon Pike on his 1806 expedition to explore the West as he tried to determine whether or not it would be possible to build a road through its peak. He determined that it wouldn't work because "it appeared impossible that wagons ever could climb over its sides." Despite Pike's conclusion, there are several roads leading up Lookout Mountain today, making transportation into the area much easier than then!
